Matches is the tool which is used to start the fire, which is generated by friction of the matchstick and the striking surface. Nowadays the matches does not spread the chemical substances which are harmful to the people that's why it is called as safety matches. Before inventing the safety matches there were some chemicals used to make the matches was harmful to the human body. There is a most interesting chemical reactions or chemistry present in the safety matches.

There are two important parts of the safety matches which are the matchstick and another is the striking surface. The matchstick contain the chemical substances which are mentioned below:
1. Sulfur/ sulfide
2. Potassium chlorate which is the oxidizing agent.
3. Powdered glass.
4. Filters.
5. Colorants.
6. Glue and starch to bind the chemical to matchstick.

All the composed chemical in the right measurement builds the safety matchstick which is free from the harmful gases and it is totally safe for the human body. The matchstick can not be generate the fire independently, it is needed the striking surface. The striking surface contains the following substances:
1. Silica or powdered glass.
2. Red phosphorus.
3. Filter.
4. Binder (glue).

When you strike the matchstick on the striking surface that time the glass particles present in the both sides generates the heat due to friction, the red phosphorus generates the white phosphorus vapour. The potassium chloride decomposed and the oxygen get liberating. Because of the heat generated by the the friction the sulfur present in the matchstick get burned and the match head generates the flame due to paraffin wax coating on the stick. The separation of the chemical used in the matchstick and the striking surface is introduced in the year 1859 to reduce the risk of the rubbing the chemicals in the matchbox. To reduce the possibility of the accident the striking surface is mounted on the outside of the matchbox.

Before invention of the chemical matches people were using the flint and steel to produce the fire, and glass focusing to the sun, etc. are the another methods of generating the fire. The Phosphorus having the flammable nature ant it will be used to generate the fire, this technique is discovered by the Hennig Brand in year 1669 who was the alchemist. Further research was done by the Robert Boyle in 1680 and studied on the phosphorus and sulfur to make the matches but it was more costlier that time. Another type of the matches is that friction match was successfully invented by the English chemist John walker in year 1826.
